Spring Bracelet

Spring Bracelet

Spring Bracelet by Carol Heppner

While in a thrift store, I found a bracelet that had good bones, but was very plain. This bracelet has seen its better days.   In celebration of Earth Day, April 22, 2013, the entire month of April is all about recycling and reusing.  So, I decided to upcycle this ordinary bracelet into a fabulous spring bracelet for our April 4 blog post.

Altering a metal bracelet was not an easy task until now.  The Ultra Clear tape by Kool Tak™ really grabs onto metal quite nicely.  I have been using this tape for a while and it sticks really well.  So, I knew I could count on it to help me alter this piece into a pretty spring bracelet.

Because the green glitter from the Sparkles Bonus Pack is so soft and lush, it can be used in jewelry making.  When in the sun, the glitter sparkles quite nicely and has turned this ordinary bracelet into a trendy spring bracelet.

The best part of this project is that it takes very little time to create.  There is no drying time.  So, you can alter your bracelet in the morning and wear your new-upcycled spring bracelet immediately.

Materials:

  • Bracelet
  • Ultra Clear – 1/2″ x 6 yards (the width of the tape will be determined by the width of the bracelet)
  • Sparkles – BONUS Pack – Green

Tools:

  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Craft stick
  • Scrap paper to catch the glitter and return it to the container

Instructions:

  1. Measure the part of the bracelet you will cover with the tape and then cut the tape to the pre-determined length.
  2. Place the tape onto the bracelet.
  3. Burnish the tape with the craft stick or other hard tool.  A teaspoon would also work.  Make sure you get the entire tape securely onto the bracelet.
  4. Remove the release plastic from the tape to expose the sticky tape (this is a double-sided tape).
  5. Shake the glitter onto the tape and then remove any excess glitter.  Gently rub the glitter with the craft stick to make sure it adheres to the tape.  While still over the scrap paper, tap the bracelet against your hand to further remove any remaining excess glitter.
  6. Gently rub the glitter into the tape with your fingers.
  7. Carefully return the glitter from the scrap paper into the glitter container.
  8. Enjoy wearing your bracelet and all the complements that are sure to follow.

To follow up – This weekend, my husband and I decided to treat ourselves to lunch in Washington, DC. The waitress saw the bracelet I made for this blog project and fell in love with it. She proceeded to question if it was a Louis Vuitton bracelet. She was serious. I laughed and thanked her for the complement and then told her how it was made for this blog.

What I love about the glitter is that it feels as if it is suede. It has such a lush look and feel. It’s not like any other glitter I have used. I love it and you will too!
